Deeply personal\, lyrically told\, and funny\, Reviving Artemis reveals Luskin’s ambivalence about guns and her fear of entering the forest alone in the dark. \nBriar Patch Books will have copies of Reviving Artemis for sale at this event. \n \nDeborah Lee Luskin moved from New York City to Vermont in 1984 to write\, garden\, keep bees\, and raise daughters. Luskin has been an editorial columnist\, radio commentator\, pen-for-hire\, and blogger. Her first novel\, Into the Wilderness\, won the Independent Publishers Gold Medal for Regional Fiction. Luskin has also enjoyed a long career as an educator\, teaching writing and literature-based humanities to gifted elementary writers\, college students\, new adult readers\, lifelong learners\, healthcare workers\, and prison inmates. But for the past eighteen years she has taught expository writing at Dartmouth College. She lives in Hanover\, New Hampshire\, with her husband and three children. Fortunately\, only two of them play hockey. Ellen recently began a two-year term as a state legislator in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Her essay titled “How Texas Teaches History” was published in the New York Times.

DESCRIPTION:The ninth annual Writing to the Light Writing Circle led by writer and writer Deborah Lee Luskin will take place in person on Sunday\, January 4 from 1:00 to 4:00pm at the Moore Free Library. The workshop will start promptly at 1 pm and end at 4. No registration required. \nAt this annual fundraiser for the Moore Free Library\, writers of all kinds and all levels of experience are invited to reflect on the light in their life in a supportive writing circle. We will write to illuminate our inner light\, honor our inner voice\, and tell whatever stories rise to be told. Prompts and guidance for automatic writing will be provided. Collectively\, we will create a safe space for those who wish to read their new words. \nThe workshop is free. DESCRIPTION:After thirty years cultivating fruits and vegetables\, raising children\, and teaching literature\, Deborah Lee Luskin stepped out of her garden and into the forest. At sixty\, it was time to age fiercely\, overcome her suburban fear of getting lost in the woods and her urban reliance on street signs to know where she was. She wanted to forge her own path through the forest by following the deer. A dedicated locavore\, Luskin didn’t want just to read the landscape\, she also wanted to eat it. \nLuskin overcame her ambivalence about guns as she gained a deeper understanding of the hunter’s role in the ecosystem of the northern forest. Her literary acumen helped her read the landscape and—as thoughtfully as she hunts for words—to hunt for deer. With the stories of Artemis\, goddess of the hunt\, childbirth\, and wild nature to inspire her\, Deborah became a deer hunter. Reviving Artemis is her story of finding her place in the natural world. \nReviving Artemis: The Making of a Huntress \nDeborah Lee Luskin has been living and writing about Vermont for over 40 years.

DESCRIPTION:Deborah Lee Luskin and Alexis Letham\, will discuss their books about how their lives are informed and intertwined with the Vermont landscape\, ethos\, and social fabric. \nDeborah Lee Luskin moved from New York City to Vermont in 1984 to write\, keep bees\, and raise daughters. She has been an editorial columnist\, radio commentator\, pen-for-hire\, and blogger. Her first novel\, Into the Wilderness\, won the Independent Publishers Gold Medal for Regional Fiction. Luskin has also enjoyed a long career as an educator\, teaching writing and literature-based humanities classes to gifted elementary writers\, college students\, new adult readers\, life-long learners\, healthcare workers\, and prison inmates. She holds a PhD in English Literature and expected to become an academic\, not a deer hunter.
