Writing Circles

Writing Circles allow writers of any ability to overcome the fear, loneliness, and procrastination of facing a blank page by writing in community with support. I create a safe space and provide the prompts for timed writing exercises designed to prime the creative pump. Participants focus and fly, letting loose the unknown in the wonder of words. We immediately read this new work, bearing witness to the strange and wonderful stories that emerge using a positive response practice that engenders a synergy, where participants invariably write more, write better, and write with greater confidence.

There is no rule about what to write. Most participants write short stories or essays, some of which add up to something longer: a novel, a memoir, a collection of stories or essays. Some write poetry. Some write letters to the editor. Whatever you write is exactly right.

Ongoing Writing Circles

I currently offer two ongoing Writing Circles. The Rosefire Writing Circle started in 2016 and meets both in-person and via Zoom on most Fridays from 1:00-4:00pm ET. The Wednesday Writing Circle started in 2024 and meets most Wednesdays from 5-7 Eastern. This circle meets only by Zoom. The writing practice is the same; the differences are when they meet and how they are administered, as described below. Please contact me for information about enrollment and pricing.

Customizable Writing Circles

I also offer two types of customized writing circles: Celebratory Writing Circles and Having the Last Word: How to Write Your Own Obituary.

Celebratory Writing Circles are customized for lifecycle events from baby showers to memorial services and everything in between. This circle can elevate a friend-or-family gathering into a profoundly meaningful and memorable event. These can be for a one-off family event or an on-going writing circle for a work-, family-, or friend group. Contact me to create the writing circle you want.

Having the Last Word: How to Write Your Own Obituary. Collecting the information about your life for someone else to write your obituary is a thoughtful gift to your survivors, but writing your own obituary is a final gift to yourself. It’s a chance to reflect on what was important in your life. Writing Your Own Obituary can be done at any age; many find it to be an important tool in deciding what makes a life worth living. Host an Obit Party and have fun!
