Elegy For a Girl, set in Vermont in 1958, captures the moment when federal road builders split Harlan Knight’s farm, and Harlan, in turn, breaks his teenage daughter’s heart.  Told in the lyrical language that invokes the pastoral, the novel recalls Vermont before the Interstates, a time before our lives became automated and our landscape dominated by cars. Elegy For a Girl is a tragedy about a father and daughter both desperate for love in a world that’s passing them by.
