My goal as a writer is to find my own voice, and my goal as a teacher is to help you find yours.
I must keep to my own style & go on my own Way; And though I may never succeed again in that, I am convinced that I should totally fail in any other. ~Jane Austen
The first step is to discover what you want to say; the next step is saying it. I can help you do both, either though a Private Tutorial, in a facilitated Writing Circle, or in a Revision Circle.
“If I had to choose one reason why I like to take writing classes with Deborah Luskin, it’s the amount of thought and preparation she puts into each class. . . I come away from each class feeling that I’ve learned something new about the craft of writing—not just an intellectual understanding, but how to actually incorporate that new technique into my writing”. ~Adult Student, Media Mentoring Workshops
Private Tutorial
I love a good story, and I can help you tell yours. I offer developmental editing services for writers who seek guidance shaping a rough draft into a polished document, from blogs to books.
We’ll work together, but I won’t fix your project; I’ll show you how to say what it is you mean in a way that will capture your audience and convey your message.
To find out if we can work together, email a description of your project along with a writing sample. Together, we’ll define the scope of work, set our goals, and create a contract to our mutual satisfaction.
Writing Circles
Invite me to lead your group in automatic writing practice. In timed writing exercises designed to prime the creative pump, writers focus and fly, letting loose the unknown in the wonder of words. We immediately read this new work, bearing witness to the strange and wonderful stories that emerge. I provide the prompts and teach a positive response practice that engenders a synergy, where participants invariably write more, write better, and write with greater confidence.
Tailored to suit your group’s needs, these customized Writing Circles can be privately or grant-funded, depending on your organization. Contact me and we’ll figure out what works best for your group.
Rosefire Writers Circle
The Rosefire Writers Circle convenes by invitation in southern Vermont. Sessions vary in length, from two to six hours. Fees vary accordingly. Contact me if you would like to receive notification of upcoming Rosefire Writers Circles.
Revision Circles
Revision Circle Workshops serve four to eight writers with a body of work they are ready to reread, review and rewrite. Participants submit work to all members of the group, and all participants read others’ work with exceptional care.
Meetings are devoted to discussing the work, using Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process, a way of providing feedback that makes the writer eager to return to work with new understanding and new ideas. CRP enlarges artistic capacity for all who participate in the well-defined steps of the process.
The beauty of a Revision Circle is the opportunity it affords to learn from others’ strengths, as well as the chance to have one’s own work read by a variety of careful and kind readers.
Revision Circles are a significant commitment to both the process of revision and to the other writers in the group. Each Revision Circle is customized to suit your group’s needs.
