Since the last report, we’ve made so much progress!
After The Builders finished laying the firebrick, Tim and I tucked two layers of ceramic blanket around the barrel oven, tacked it down with chicken wire, and covered it with the first layer of stucco. Then we went to Maine, bicycled, kayaked, and ate oysters for a week.
Back at the farm, Andy applied the second coat of stucco and started building the brick house that will keep the weather out and add charm. It’s really Andy’s talents for design and craftsmanship that’s making this stove better than Tim and I ever could have.
The brick house will support the protective roof, but we’re racing against time: We hope to finish the brickwork before it gets too cold and to add the roof before snow flies. Meanwhile, the oven itself is operational. We’ve started curing it, which entails firing it on six consecutive days with ever increasing fires. By this weekend, we should be able to test it out with our first wood-fired pizzas.
