We didn’t even wait for the roof before we baked pizza–twice. The first firing turned into a make-a-pizza party: seven people, eight pizzas. They were more amoeba-shaped than round, but incredibly delicious. Just five people the second time. Pizzas were even better and a little more shapely. Practice.
At the second firing, I was ready with a boule of bread dough to slide in after the pizza came out. As the oven cooled to 400, I switched the bread out and put a chicken in. Finally, I left a pot of beans in the oven overnight. A week’s meals on a single firing!
Full disclosure: the bread was overcooked, the chicken underdone, and the beans were just right. Not bad for a first try.
On a cold, windy, day last week, the roof went on. We outsourced this job to a professional; otherwise, the whole thing is homemade—and finished!
The first pizzas!
