We are not promised tomorrow Be kind today. We are not promised tomorrow Pay your debts, forgive those owed you. We are not promised tomorrow Don’t delay, do it now. We are not promised tomorrow Cross everything that doesn’t matter off your list. We are not promised tomorrow Savor today: Watch the sun rise Work with focus Every little thing: the page, the dishes. We are not promised tomorrow Eat slowly, not too much. We are not promised tomorrow Love your body, When it’s gone, so are you. We are not promised tomorrow Banish grudges, embrace love. We are not promised tomorrow Don’t put off the work that needs to be done: Greet your neighbors, welcome refuges, write letters, vote. We are not promised tomorrow Prepare the soil for those who will take our place: Plant sees for those who follow. We are not promised tomorrow Tell someone: casket, donation or funeral pyre. Leave directions for your chattel. We are not promised tomorrow Take rest, just in case tomorrow comes.

I met some Afghan workers recently, working very hard on my neighbors’ lawn.
In halting English, they told me that they consider the United States to be peaceful.
Most of us haven’t used that word to describe the last 3 years in this country. But they no longer fear Taliban attacks.

I loved this.
Thanks for the reminder of the promise of today.
And may you enjoy a whole lot of tomorrows.
Thank you.

Good reminder. Come to think of it, I’ve intended to make an appointment to formalize my final requests–music, readings, where photos are stored, where they can find my will… When my Other Half passed on, I appreciated that we had done that soon after he turned 80, when he began reminding out-of-town family, when we visited, that “the warranty has run out” and we couldn’t count on more visits, and I am forever grateful to the daughter and niece who took us to visit the Canadian part of our family shortly before Covid came into the news, and the last time he was able to travel.
It was certainly a help for me to say, “Here is what he wants” and not have to think it all through. My own wishes only need better organization and a discussion with those who will carry them out, and now–not on an indefinite tomorrow!
